The University and the City

The 2014 University and the City conference will focus on the role of autonomy for the vitality of universities and cities. The theme of Autonomy of Universities – Autonomy of Cities will explore how cities and universities achieve, use and exploit their autonomy. Does greater autonomy lead to better cooperation between the two sets of actors? International relations are just one example for the autonomous behavior of higher education institutions and their host locations. The apparent multitude of activities of both cities and universities should not mask the vast differences between different national settings. With cities, the room for manoeuvre  varies greatly and ranges from constitutionally guaranteed rights of autonomy and  taxation (as in the case of Germany) to local governments whose rights depend on the mercy of national parliaments and whose authority is limited to the provision of infrastructure. Universities present a similar picture: some of them are little more than subordinates to higher education authorities whereas others enjoy a large degree of freedom and self-governance. To increase their room for manoeuvre and their international visibility cities and universities alike create international alliances.

The 2014 conference will be held from 5 to 7 June at Goethe University’s Westend Campus in the heart of Frankfurt.

The University and the City is co-funded by the Strategic Partnerships programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft Frankfurt, Aventis Foundation, Santander Universitäten, Frankfurt Rhein Main Die Wirtschaftsinitiative, and the City of Frankfurt am Main.
