The University and the City

The University and the City is a bi-annual conference series organised jointly by Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Toronto. The conference aims to investigate interrelations between higher education institutions and their urban locations in an interdisciplinary context. Exploring themes that are of high relevance to both the universities and their host cities the conference strengthens the link between the two sets of actors in theory and practice. The conference series includes contributions from academics and practitioners alike and began in 2010 with a systematic overview of interactions between higher education institutions and the cities in which they are located, whereas the 2012 conference focused on the role of education for the integration of migrants into the urban society. The third conference in 2014 formed the international centerpiece of Goethe University’s centenary celebrations and widened the scope of analysis by inviting all of Goethe University’s most important international partners and their city administrations. It focused on the autonomy of universities and cities. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Birmingham –Frankfurt city partnership the University of Birmingham hosted the 2016 conference, which focused on sports and its role in society, such as grassroots engagement in local communities and its impact on the well-being of the citizens.

The University and the City is co-funded by the Strategic Partnerships programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the City of Frankfurt am Main, Goethe University and its strategic partners hosting the conference.
